JEFF

“Jeff, I can’t stay here,” she says to me like I have lost my mind somehow, “What are you going to tell people? I’m the nanny?” She asks, and I am offended. I would never insinuate she’s the nanny. She’s Macie’s mom. But she has a point. People, nosy fucking bastards they are, will ask questions if there’s a lady living with me all of a sudden. This place has been a bachelor pad since I bought it.

I need to think quickly; I want us to make this work. For Macie. And for me. That thought snuck in there from nowhere.

“No, we can say you’re my fiancé for now. You are Macie’s mom. It makes sense, and you are more than a nanny.” I think about it a few seconds more. “If we say we’re engaged, the press might not shred you for leaving Macie with me.” They are ruthless fuckers and can be cruel and unkind at the best of times. “It will be better for my PR, too, if I am engaged to her mom.”

“We’re not, though…” she says. “Engaged. We had a one-night stand, made poor choices, and I had a baby,” she says it so clinically it actually hurts. “I can’t just live with you and pretend to be your fiancée.”

“Why not?” I don’t get it.

“Because it’s not true, because I have a job. Because we are not even dating or together or anything!” She is getting all worked up, and it’s upsetting Macie. Her eyes shine, and I notice the dusting of freckles across her cheeks. Her glitter eye makeup from the show is shining under the downlights in my living room, and I need her to stay. I need to sleep and think—and I need to know she loves our child and that she would stay for Macie. “I hate lies; I can’t live one.”

“She needs you, Angie. I can’t do this solo. Who cares about a white fucking lie? We know what we are and aren’t.” I wanted to save her from the public crucifixion she’ll suffer when the press catches wind. I found her.

“What are we?” She asks, folding her arms.

“Parents,” I say, “we are her parents. We have to find a way to do this together.” It doesn’t matter what we are. Macie is what is most important. “That’s all we have to be. If that changes at some point, we can talk about it. But for now, we just have to be her mom and dad together.” I mean that she has both of us.

“We’re not together, Jeff. We never were.”

“That’s not what I meant,” I say, “I just want her to have a mom and a dad.”

“We can do that without lying about me being your fiancée,” she says, but my brain is thinking about headlines, and news articles, and my team. I have to make this so that it doesn’t blow up like my having a baby already did. Angie has no idea what my world can be like.
